Standing in the Shadows of Kiefer Sutherland

I was aware that many celebrity families are full of actors but did not know that the acting tree stretched through many generations in Kiefer Sutherland's family .

Fellow movie blogger Cindy (aka Moonshadow) over at My Movie Mania examines how being a sibling of Kiefer Sutherland, our current King Dong, comes with tough responsibilities. Find out what happens when horror film sequels are combined with actors who's skills may be a little premature:

As a horror movie fan and a girl who is willing to watch almost anything, I’ve seen most of the things that Kiefer Sutherland has been in, including some of the very good and underrated films he made like Freeway.

My favorite Kiefer Sutherland role remains his portrayal of the not-so-good doctor in Alex Proyas’ Dark City and I’ve loved his dad in dozens of different roles over the years, certainly including his horror roles.

I’ve even read the interview where Kiefer mentions that he benefitted from the time his father took off from acting to spend with Kiefer’s three step-brothers as they were growing up. Unfortunately for his brother Angus, Kiefer did not pass on the same favor to him. Last year, 20 years after Kiefer made a huge splash in The Lost Boys, Angus agreed to start in the sequel.

The results were not promising for the younger Sutherland. As any fan of the first movie will attest, Lost Boys: The Tribe was not worth the 21 years wait between release dates. It is not an awful movie, though it is considerably more tongue-in-cheek and less dark than the original.

However, selecting Angus to take on a role where he would so obviously be compared to his older brother was patently unfair to the younger Sutherland. Kiefer has had time to mature as an actor and his portrayal of “David” is one of the best vampire villains of all time. Angus’ “Shane” walks in the shadow of a best actor brother and a cult classic movie.

As a horror fan, from indies to major blockbusters, I’ve seen a lot of really bad acting in horror movies and to his credit, Angus never reaches that level. But it might be a lot better for his little brother if Kiefer had not created such big shoes to fill.
